Bubbie's Hawaii Homemade Ice Cream and Desserts
Hawaii is known for a lot of things: sunny skies, beautiful beaches, tropical weather, surfing and... ice cream? Yes! You can now add ice cream to the list of things that Hawaii is known for. Bubbie's Homemade Ice Cream & Desserts has some of the best ice cream in the state and also some unique desserts as well. In 1985, Keith Robbins opened the first Bubbie's Ice Cream shop in Manoa near the University of Hawaii campus on Oahu. Robbins made the ice cream in the back room of the ice cream shop, one flavor at a time using natural ingredients. Word of Bubbie's delicious homemade ice cream grew steadily and customers stopped by day and night to try out this delicious confection. Soon, Bubbie's was getting a ton of business from local restaurants and hotels; so much so that he could no longer create all of the ice cream from one location. He decided to make an ice cream factory in Aiea. The factory opened in 1989 and has since been producing the ice cream for Bubbie's customers daily.
Bubbie's Hawaii is best known for their Mochi ice cream. What is mochi? Mochi is a traditional Japanese food made from rice. The rice is cooked and then pounded into a sticky paste. The paste is then molded around a scoop of ice cream of various flavors and chilled. When Bubbie's first introduced this Hawaiian style dessert, the local folks went crazy for it. Mochi ice cream fever was the talk of the town. Today, Bubbie's mochi ice cream is still sold in restaurants and supermarkets all over the state. People can even order Mochi ice cream online and have it shipped to them anywhere in the world!
With many desserts with clever / suggestive names like Keep it up All Night, Maybe the Bag Broke, Total Insanity, More than a Mouthful, Come here little girl, Buffy's Aural Massage and Hair by Daniel, Bubbie's continues to cater to the sweet tooth with it's own spin on ice cream desserts. They also serve coffee, tea, cappuccino, smoothies and they also have an AWESOME Peanut butter shake!
On a recent visit to Bubbie's in Manoa, we tried out their Mocha Chip ice cream in a waffle cone. The place was packed as usual, but after standing in line for a few minutes, I had my ice cream. It was delicious; very smooth and sweet. If you're on Oahu, be sure to make it a point to stop off at Bubbie's Ice Cream!
