Hawaii Sunsets

August 29, 2008 3:29 PM • by Hisurf Staff • Posted to Hawaii Facts | Comments (0) | Permalink
Hawaii is known for it's beautiful beaches, fantastic surfing and wonderful year round weather. Hawaii is also one of the nicest places to watch the sunset!

Since I love taking photos, I set out to take some shots of the sun setting. I thought it was going to be "duck soup" to take beautiful Hawaiian sunset photos but I was wrong. You definitely need to have a strategy for taking your photos as I soon found out!

After quickly packing all of my photo equipment into my car, I headed out to Ala Moana Beach and prepared for my first sunset photo shoot. What I didn't realize was that the sun went down later than I thought. Because I didn't find out when the sun was actually going to set, I spent nearly 2 hours in the sun waiting. Not good. First mistake!

My second mistake was my location. I had no idea whether or not Ala Moana Beach park would be a good location for this sunset shoot... all I knew was that I've seen the sun go down in this part of the island previously. The reason it was a mistake was because Ala Moana fronts the main docks and many freighter and charter boats come passing along the skyline. Not to mention the countless windsurfers and passenger sail boats as well.

Needless to say, my first set of sunset photos were "ugly" with a freighter boat in the picture. But what could I do?

Lastly, sunsets don't last very long so you only have a few minutes to take your photos. The sun won't wait for anyone. So if you are trying to frame your photo, or get the proper exposure, you better do it ahead of time and know your camera well so you can adjust your settings quickly.

I soon learned that there were many great places to take photos of a Hawaiian Sunset. Here are a few places you can check out:
Kaka'ako Beach Park
Waikiki Beach
Pearl Harbor
Ko'olina Resort
Waianae coast (just about anywhere in that area)
Yokohama beach
Sand Island Park

Each location has it's pro's and con's so expect that you'll be doing a few photoshoots and a lot of driving to try them out.
