Most Americans are familiar with Pearl Harbor as the scene of the Japanese attack that pulled the United States into World War II. There are, however, other aspects of Pearl Harbor that also make it an important place to visit. Pearl Harbor remains a vital, operational military base for the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Ocean. Many military operations and relief efforts are planned and staged out of Pearl Harbor. It was established as a military base by the United States in 1908.

The USS Arizona Memorial is the most recognized feature in Pearl Harbor, and is visited by thousands each year. Pearl Harbor was attacked by over 300 Japanese aircraft operating from six aircraft carriers. 2,402 Americans were killed in the attack. 1,177 crewmembers died aboard the battleship Arizona and remain forever entombed in the ship below the gentle ripples of the harbor. The memorial is built directly over the ship and allows visitors the opportunity to quietly reflect on the courage, valor, and the sacrifice made by the USS Arizona's crew.

Lesser known than the USS Arizona Memorial is the USS Missouri. The Missouri is a venerated warship, commissioned in 1944. The World War II surrender of the Japanese took place aboard the Missouri, which went on to fight in the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and in Operation Desert Storm in 1991. The Missouri was decommissioned in 1992 and donated to the USS Missouri Memorial Association in 1998. The ship is now a floating museum in Pearl Harbor.

Also at Pearl Harbor is the USS Bowfin, a World War II submarine. The Bowfin is now a floating submarine museum detailing the experiences of the ship, which includes the sinking of a total of over 15 enemy vessels. The USS Bowfin was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1986, and continues to welcome visitors today.

The Pearl Harbor Shipyard is Hawaii's regional maintenance center for the U.S. Navy. Naval ships are serviced at the shipyard, making it an important component of the presence of the U.S. military in the Pacific region.

Tours are offered to the USS Arizona Memorial, as well as to the National Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl. The military's proud history in Hawaii can be explored on several tours, allowing visitors to experience first-hand the influence the armed forces of the United States in Hawaii and the Pacific region over the years.

I was on strong ones for nearly 4 months. Tune in “The

tv , (which are announced on her Twitter ), and occasionally has work

TEPCO is continuing to struggle with how to handle large amounts of radioactive water, the byproduct of keeping nuclear fuel in the crippled Fukushima Daiichi reactors cool . BRM: The Pirates pitching staff posted nice numbers against the Reds last season (10-5, 3.29 ERA), but struggled against the Brewers (3-12, 5.25) and, to a lesser extent, the Cards (7-9, 4.28).
